I'm a very, very light sleeper. Someone goes to the loo in the night 4 doors away and it wakes me up. (I do live in a terraced house not a detached). I'm also not someone who can just roll over and go back to sleep once I've woken up at silly o'clock. I dislike people who can.
My mind is already up and running - 'hmm what have I go to do today'; 'what shall I wear', 'what's the weather going to be like', 'I must remember to charge my laptop before I leave' etc etc.
So I have a little game to try and stop my mind wandering into work things and things I can't really do much about at 4.22 am.
I know sleep gurus recommend getting up and doing something non-stimulating if you're wide awake, but that seems a bit weird and I like being in bed and lying down at night.
Instead, I do alphabetical word games... I know, I know this is probably stimulating my brain not calming it, so I try not to be too harsh on myself and I'm allowed to move to the next letter if I can't immediately think of, say a cheese beginning with H... (Halloumi; Havarti?)
So in case you want to try it, here's what you do!!
Think of a category - mine obviously tend to revolve around food - and try to go through it alphabetically.
Here are some ideas to get you started - desserts; restaurants in the area; cheeses; biscuits; beer brands; fruits; pie fillings. Endless fun!😂
Please add any others you can think of in the comments- I'm running out!!
But remember - don't drive yourself mad if you can't think of one. Even worse - definitely don't ask Google or Alexa for help - your neighbours and the rest of your household might not be thrilled if they hear her shout "Knickerbocker Glory" at 5am.
Just move on to the next letter. Or if your partner is being annoying and snoring loudly like mine often is, they'll be delighted to be woken up and asked to think of a fish beginning with J. (John Dory)
You'll often (hopefully) find yourself falling asleep by N so you won't have to worry about X Y and Z!!
Let me know how you get on!
